Herb-Scented Hanger
Herb-Scented Hanger
Gosh, December's a busy month isn't it? Thank you for taking a few minutes to visit the Moda Bakeshop! My name is Nicola Dodd from CakeStand Quilts and I'm so happy to be back to share my recipe for a covered hanger, complete with matching, herb-scented sachet. Not only is it quick and easy to make, it costs next-to-nothing: a perfect last-minute Christmas gift or a final, festive touch to welcome holiday visitors.
Wire hanger (free from the Dry Cleaners!)
1 or 2 Jelly Roll strips
(2) 2.5" Candy squares (these can be cut from the end of your Jelly Roll strips)
4" piece of ribbon
Fresh or dried Rosemary/Lavender
Craft glue
1. I used fresh Rosemary to fill my sachet, so - rather unusually! - step one is to cut a few sprigs from the garden. Rinse and dry them thoroughly. Spread your sprigs out on a baking pan and dry in a pre-heated oven on its lowest setting (175 F/75 C). It will take about an hour - but start checking after 45 minutes - until the Rosemary feels brittle to the touch.
You might want to stay in the kitchen to complete your project while it dries, because it will smell wonderful! And don't worry if you can't get hold of fresh herbs at this time of year: dried Rosemary from the supermarket or dried Lavender from a craft shop would also make a lovely filling.
2. If you're not using Candy squares, trim (2) 2.5" pieces from the end of your Jelly Roll strips and set aside.
3. Trim down the Jelly Roll strips into (2) 1" x WOF pieces.
4. Trim the end of (1) 1" x WOF strip at a 45 degree angle and, starting at the hook, glue the the end over the tip (as it can be sharp) then continue wrapping the fabric strip around the wire. Overlap the previous strip slightly as you go, so that all of the wire is hidden and dab a little glue on your strip every couple of inches to secure the fabric.
5. Depending on the size of your wire hanger and how closely you wrap the fabric, you may not need both Jelly Roll strips. I was able to cover my hanger with just one. Use a small brush or your finger-tips to smooth a little glue on any frayed edges.
6. While the glue is drying, make the sachet by placing the 2.5" squares right sides together and joining them along one side (shown in blue) with a 1/4" seam.
7. Open up the seam and position the ribbon - folded in half - with the folded edge 1/2" away from the bottom of the sachet, as shown, pinning it in place if preferred.
8. Sew along the top and trim away the ends of the ribbon; then partially sew the remaining side seam, leaving an opening.
9. Pull the two sides apart and match up the bottom of each side seam - shown marked with blue asterisks * - before sewing the bottom shut.
10. Trim away the seam allowance to 1/8" at the corners and turn right-sides-out. Gently push out the corners with the end of a crochet hook (or something similar).
11. Fill with the dried Rosemary and slip-stitch the opening closed.
12. Hang the sachet over the hanger.
One herb-scented hanger!
This would be a lovely project to make with children over the holidays and we all know how much homemade gifts are appreciated, especially when they're made with little hands!
Wishing you the merriest of Christmases, filled with warm hugs, delicious food and lots of love,
Nicola xx
