Fourth & twelve...
Fourth & twelve...
Because we're in Texas, folks here might think that refers to football.
It doesn't. In this case, it means that the Fourth of July is twelve days away. And there is sewing to do!
If you haven't started... this might be a bit ambitious.
This glorious quilt is Portage Lake. The fabrics are from the Grand Traverse Bay and Miss Scarlet collections by Minick & Simpson. Laurie Simpson designed this spectacular quilt, and made her quilt with hand-appliqué and piecing, and it's hand-quilted. The quilt shown here was made by Tammy Vonderschmitt and gorgeously quilted by Angela McCorkle.
Actually, if your friends call you "Speedy" - like Tammy is - you could get this done in time. Maybe not as perfectly pieced... but it would be done.
What about a flag pillow?
Alison Harris of Cluck Cluck Sew designed this terrific Flag Block and Pillow. It's a free pattern and tutorial and this is definitely finish-able in time to enjoy on the Fourth of July.
If you're looking for flags, then Jan Patek's Long May She Wave might be a perfect wall-hanging or table-runner.
While this has a bit of appliqué, it's just a little bit. Jan used some of the beautiful reds, blues and navy prints from her various collections. Instead of navy, the prints in Garden House are Charcoal but the reds are perfect.
Indulge me... I love Laurie's Sampler quilts. After making Austin Bluebird with red, white, blue, gold and a teeny bit of green, she made another version entirely in shades of blue and white. Hand-pieced. Hand-appliquéd. Hand-quilted.
Laurie is such a show-off. And yes, I'm most envious of her talents and skills.
Minick & Simpson fabrics are also perfect for any kind of patriotic quilt - as evidenced by this gorgeous Nested Churn Dash quilt made by Sherri McConnell of A Quilting Life.
Designed by Jane Davidson of Want It Need It - this Nested Churn Dash became a big summer quilt-along/sew-along in the summer of 2014. The 24" blocks can be separated with sashing for an almost 80" x 80" quilt. Add borders and the quilt can be queen- or king-sized. The block pattern is only available as a PDF download.
Sherri's gorgeous quilt is made using a large assortment of scraps in shades of red, blue, white and cream.
A little over a month ago, Camille Roskelley of Thimbleblossoms "whipped" up a little flag block... and then a quilt. And because of overwhelming demand, she created a simple pattern for her Stars and Stripes quilt that is only available as a PDF download.
Measuring 56" x 72", it's made with Fat Quarters and some yardage. Or scraps and some yardage.
Chelsi Stratton - the daughter-half of A Quilting Life - used their upcoming Desert Bloom collection to make this beautiful Desert Stars and Stripes.
Quilted and bound. Actually, there are a whole lot of pieced, quilted, bound and newly-washed-so-it's-officially-finished Stars and Stripes quilts popping up.
And finally, if you have some small scraps or a few strips, you can make a Flag Tumbler quilt.
Using a small tumbler template or a Dresden ruler, cut some tumblers. Starting with strips measuring 2" wide, these tumblers were cut in the middle of the smaller ruler so they'd be short-and-chubby.
You'll need the following pieces:
- Navy - 16 assorted
- Red - 42 assorted
- Cream - 32 matching or different
- Chambray or other edging - 20 matching
For the edging - the chambray - this could be the same as the Cream. I like doing this as it gives me an edge that I can trim straight to frame the flag. Strips are sewn to the sides for a border - I cut those at 2 1/2" wide.
Lay out the tumblers as shown. More rows or longer rows are easily done - as are bigger or smaller tumblers.
The tumblers are sewn together in vertical rows.
Scant 1/4" seam allowance - of course. When the pieces are aligned right-sides-together, there should be a little "v" at the top and bottom edges of the seam that falls right at the seam allowance.
I like to press the seams open. It's not required.
When the rows are all assembled, trim the top and bottom edges straight.
After trimming, the rectangle measures 14" x 19 1/2".
I have twelve days to get this quilted and finished.
Meaning I've got at least ten days to think about it.
Happy Tuesday!
