National Sew a Jelly Roll Day is just around the corner – September 16, 2023. Moda designated the third Saturday in September as National Jelly Roll Day back in 2017 to inspire quilters to crack open a Jelly Roll® and get sewing with this fun precut! Since then, quilt shops around the country have joined the movement to offer in-person and virtual sewing events and special patterns for National Sew a Jelly Roll Day. Quilters on Instagram can join in the fun by posting their Jelly Roll projects with the hashtags #nationalsewajellyrollday and #projectjellyroll. Our Moda designers have published a treasure trove of Jelly Roll patterns over the years. We can’t fit them all into one blog post, but we did share a baker’s dozen of Jelly Roll patterns in a variety of styles and skill levels in our last blog post HERE. Remember, only quilt shops can purchase directly from Moda – if you see a pattern you like, be sure to ask your favorite quilt shop if they carry it, or check the designer’s website or Etsy shop.

Every year, Moda releases new, free patterns just for National Sew a Jelly Roll Day. We’ll have four new patterns for you this year! Here’s a little preview (NOTE -- These patterns will be available for download here on the Moda blog later this week.):

Verticals: You’ll need 1 Jelly Roll of your favorite collection, 1 Junior Jelly Roll of a background fabric, and 1 1/2 additional yards of that background fabric

Half Step: You’ll need 1 Jelly Roll of your favorite collection, 7/8 yard of background fabric, and 5/8 yard of binding fabric

Pocket Change: You’ll need 1 Jelly Roll of your favorite collection, 1 1/8 yard of a dark accent fabric, 1 1/8 yard of a light accent fabric, and 5/8 yard of binding fabric

Four by Four Pillows: You’ll need 1 Jelly Roll of your favorite collection plus an additional 2/3 each of backing and lining fabrics for each pillow (one Jelly Roll makes up to four pillows)
