Did Someone Say Cake? - Part 2
Did Someone Say Cake? - Part 2
Did we mention that there are twelve quilts in Did Someone Say Cake?
Much like the edible kind of layer cake, each of these twelve quilts starts with the same basic ingredients. In this case, it's a Moda Layer Cake and some background yardage. Did Someone Say Cake will be arriving in shops this week.
But that's where the similarity ends as these quilts couldn't be more different than a chocolate cake is from a pineapple upside-down cake. Chocolate Upside Down Cake? More on that in a moment.
You might have a stash of favorite Layer Cakes, or you might want to search out something new. A few of these had us looking to see if we still had a particular Layer Cake stashed away!
Jeweled Diamonds by Michele Kuhns of Crayon Box Quilt Studio is our first quilt today.
Jeweled Diamonds is made with half-square triangles, and there are enough left over from making the quilt to make a table runner, and a pillow. Michele used a Malibu Batiks Layer Cake and a Bella Solid in Off-White to make this 72" x 80" quilt.
What is your all-time favorite Moda Layer Cake? It’s really tough to pick my favorite Moda Layer Cake because I love so many of the lines but if I have to pick just one it would be Kate Spain’s Terrain. I still have a layer cake of this line, waiting to find just the perfect project to use it in.
What is your favorite kind of cake? My favorite cake is from childhood, it's my Mom's Chocolate Upside Down Cake. It's the cake I would request every year for my birthday.
Do you have a recipe or link to share? Yes! It took me many, many years to get my Mom to write it down so my sisters and I could have the recipe, and continue making it. It is a family favorite!

How long have you been a Moda Bake Shop Chef? I became a Moda Chef in November 2014 with the publication on the Moda Bake Shop blog of my Castles on the Horizon pattern. My second pattern, Charm Pack Shuffle, appeared on the Moda Bake Shop in November 2018. I’ve also participated as a chef in a number of the Moda quilt alongs. This is my first pattern published in print.
Michele's Charm Pack Shuffle - made with 1 Layer Cake or 4 charm packs of April Rosenthal's All Weather Friend.
My favorite part of making a quilt is... deciding which fabric line to use, if I’m going to use all or parts of an entire line, or putting together the fabrics, either from my stash or while shopping at an LQS. I love to figure out how the colors and prints are going to work together.
My least favorite part of quilt making is... dealing with the leftover scraps. I’ve made huge headway into that this past year, and now all of my scraps - every single bit - is cut up into usable precut sizes. I’m certainly ready to design a new scrap quilt or two.

Lauren Terry and Mountain Top is next.
Moda's Bella Solids Layer Cakes made for an efficient use of fabric for this quilt. One Layer Cake of Bella Bleached White (9900 LC 98) and two Junior Layer Cakes of Navy (9900JLC 20), plus additional Navy yardage were all that was needed to make this quilt. (A Junior Layer Cake has 20 squares instead of the usual 40 squares.)
What is your all-time favorite Moda Layer Cake? Bonnie and Camille's April showers. The line came out right around when I started quilting and earnest, and I loved all the bright but classic colors.
What is your favorite type of cake? I actually love ice cream. Not ice cream cake, just ice cream. So my favorite type of cake is Moda.
How long have you been a MBS Chef? Since 2014! I still remember submitting my first project and feeling so nervous. My son was a baby at the time, and I would design and quilt while he napped.
Candied Hearts by Lauren Terry for The Best of Moda Bake Shop book - in shops now.
My favorite part of making a quilt is... Piecing the quilt top is my favorite. I love listening to a book or even watching a show while I'm sewing. It feels like a type of therapy for me.
My least favorite part of making a quilt is... Basting and pinning the quilt sandwich. I used to say that my definition of wealth would be owning my own long-term quilter. Maybe in time...
This is Flying Arrows, one of Lauren's Moda Bake Shop quilts. It's made with Corey Yoder's Sundrops collection.

Garden Gate by Jen Daly of Jen Daly Quilts is our third Cake to share today.
Measuring 56" x 68", Jen used Fig Tree's Strawberries and Rhubarb collection to create a beautiful cottage garden filled with big, luscious blooms.
What is your all-time favorite Moda Layer Cake? It's a recent one, but I LOVE Homemade Homespuns by Kansas Troubles Quilters.
North Woods by Jen Daly, made with one Layer Cake of Homemade Homespuns by Kansas Troubles.
What is your favorite kind of cake? My mom's Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese icing.

How long have you been a MBS Chef? Since April of 2015 - almost seven years!
Jen's Christmas Baubles, a charm pack quilt she designed for The Best of Moda Bake Shop.
My favorite part of making a quilt is... It's a toss up between choosing/shopping for fabric, and watching blocks begin to accumulate on my design wall.
My least favorite part of making a quilt is... Pre-washing and pressing fabric - I want to jump right in!
