BH5 – Group 2, Block 30 – Lynne Hagmeier
It’s a bittersweet Blockheads Wednesday as we have reached the final block of the Blockheads 5 series today! We kicked off Blockheads 5, Group 1 last September with one of the original Blockheads designers, Betsy Chutchian, so it seems only fitting that we should wrap up Blockheads 5, Group 2 with another original Blockheads designer – Lynne Hagmeier of Kansas Troubles Quilters! Lynne’s block, Shadow Star, is a classic design and the perfect finishing touch to our star-themed block series.
You can find this week’s pattern here: BH5 – Group 2, Block 30 – Shadow Star by Lynne Hagmeier

In our final Blockheads 5 block tutorial, we’re taking one last look at the four-at-a-time flying geese method. We’ll also show how color placement changes the look of the Shadow Star block and talk about how to get flatter seams when sewing your Shadow Star blocks. You can watch this week’s video below:
Before we share our blocks this week, we just want to take a moment to thank our Blockheads designers for sharing these block designs with us and all they do to inspire and teach us and give us beautiful fabrics to sew with! We had more than 30 designers contribute to Blockheads 5, making this our biggest series yet. We had many Blockheads regulars participate, but we also had so many new designers join us this year as well, which was exciting! Hopefully you have had a chance to get to know our designers a little better through Blockheads.
And thanks to their creative designs, we’ve covered lots of techniques in this series! From basic elements like HSTs and flying geese to applique, foundation paper piecing, and partial seams, we’ve had plenty of opportunities to try something new or learn a different way of doing something.
We would also like to thank each and every one of YOU who sewed along with us! We have loved seeing your blocks every week! It’s so much fun to see how everyone interprets each block and makes it their own. We have been inspired by your beautiful blocks and can’t wait to see your finished quilts!
Though today is the last official block pattern post, stay tuned for a video coming soon in which the Moda team will share our block settings!
Though we don’t have immediate plans for Blockheads 6, we do have other great skill-building quilt-alongs in the works, so be sure to sign up for the Moda newsletter so that you’ll be the first to hear about upcoming programs!
Are you ready to see our blocks?
Lissa is using Nantucket Summer for her blocks.
Alison made a fall version in 12” and a patriotic version in 6”.
And I made a traditional/repro scrappy fall version in 6”.
Now…off you go to press, cut, and sew! And don’t forget to share your blocks with us in our Facebook group or on Instagram (#modablockheads5)! Thanks again for joining us for Blockheads 5!
