Today's block is all about the ocean waves! Sail away with Chef Emily Bailey...

This block involves a little bit of applique and the technique may be a little bit challenging. The end results are 100 percent worth it! The wave effect really makes this block pop. However, if you don't feel up to this method, there is an alternate block that gives a similar result in the Printer Friendly file at the bottom of the post.

From blue and navy prints, cut:

• 2- 5” squares
• 1- 3 1/2” square
• 3- 2 1/2” squares
• 2- 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” rectangles
• 1- 2 1/2” x 2” rectangle
• 2- 1 1/2” x 4” rectangles
• 3- 1 1/2” squares
• 1- 1 1/2” x 1” rectangle
• 1- 1 1/2” x 3” rectangle
• 1- 1 1/2” x 6 1/2” rectangle
• 1- 1” x 6 1/2” rectangle

From green and red prints (for boats and sail), cut 1- 3 1/2” square and 1- 1 1/2” x 5” rectangle

From white print, cut 2- 2 1/2” square

1- 4 1/2" circle from lightweight cardboard.

Take a 5” blue square and cut corners so you have a rough circle

Using a large basting stitch sew 1/8” around your rough circle
Pull basting thread until circle starts to bunch up

Place lightweight cardboard against the wrong side of fabric and continue to pull basting thread until the fabric fits tight around the circle.
Press with steam and/or starch to set edge
Pop cardboard out and press again

Center this circle on a 5” navy circle and top stitch in place.  Repeat with navy circle and square

Cut this unit into quarters as shown.

Trim seam allowance
Repeat this process with remaining 5” blue and navy circle unit

Take a quarter navy circle and sew it to the left side of a
2 1/2” x 4 1/2” navy rectangle
Take a quarter blue circle and sew it between a 2 1/2” blue square and 2 1/2” navy square
Take a quarter navy circle and sew it to the right side of a 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” blue rectangle
Sew these together
Set aside

Take a quarter blue circle and sew it to the left side of a 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” navy rectangle
Take a quarter navy circle and sew it between a 2 1/2” blue square and 2 1/2” navy square
Take a quarter blue circle and sew it to the right side of a 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” blue rectangle
Sew these together
Set aside.

Draw a diagonal line on the 3 1/2” navy square
Place it right sides together with the red 3 1/2” square
Sew 1/4” on either side of the line
Cut on line and press open. Square up one of your half square triangle to 3”.  Sew the 1 1/2” x 3” blue rectangle to the top of this

Sew the 1 1/2” x 4” navy rectangle to the right side
Repeat this process with green square and blue pieces but mirror them as shown.
Set aside

Draw a diagonal line on a 2 1/2” white square
Place it right sides together with the remaining 2 1/2” blue square
Sew 1/4” on either side of the drawn line
Cut on line and press open. Square up one of your half square triangle to 2” Sew the 2 1/2” x 2” blue rectangle to the top
Sew the remaining 1 1/2” x 4” blue rectangle to the right side
Repeat this process with the remaining white square
and navy pieces but mirror them as shown

Sew the two sail pieces together as shown.

Draw diagonal lines on two of the 1 1/2” navy squares Place on each end of the green 1 1/2” x 5” rectangle
Sew on the diagonal line, flip, press and trim seam allowance.

Repeat with 1 1/2” blue squares and 1 1/2” x 5”  red rectangle.

Sew the 1 1/2” square to the right side of the green boat
and the 1 1/2” x 1” rectangle to the left side
Sew the 1 1/2” square to the left side of the red boat
and the 1 1/2” x 1” rectangle to the right side.

Sew the 1 1/2” x 6 1/2” blue rectangle to the top of the red boat.

Sew the 1” x 6 1/2” blue rectangle to the bottom of the red boat.

.
Sew this to the bottom of your red sail unit.
Repeat this process with the navy pieces and green boat pieces.

Arrange your boats and waves into a four patch and sew together.

 

This block finishes at 12" x 12".

It was so fun to design this block.  I love the beach!  It's my favorite vacation spot.  My hubby recently bought a hobie cat so sailing was on my mind.  These cute boats with the gentle waves came to mind.  If you stop by my blog you will find how you can use this block to make a cute baby quilt.
