My name is Valerie Rigney of The Aqua Umbrella. I'm so excited to bring you my first tutorial to the Moda Bake Shop! I've always loved large blocks for making quilts, so I'm happy to bring you a fun wall quilt that you could easily turn into an amazing lap quilt.

This quilt/project finishes at 24" x 24".

1/2 yard background fabric #9900-48
3/4 yard backing fabric #9900-98
1/4 yard binding fabric #5631-16

Cutting Instructions

From Fabric A, cut (4) 3-1/2" squares, (4) 4" squares and (4) 3-1/2"x 6-1/2" rectangles.

From Fabric B, cut (12) 4" squares and (8) 3-1/2" squares. Cut (8) of the 4" square in half along the diagonal.

From the background fabric, cut (1) 6-1/2"x WOF strip, subcut into (5) 6-1/2" squares

From the background fabric, cut (1) 7"x WOF strip, submit into (4) 7" squares.

Binding: Cut (3) 2-1/4"x WOF.

Putting it All Together-

HST (Half Square Triangles): Place (1) 4" Fabric A square on top of (1) 4" Fabric B square, RST (right sides together), draw a pencil line from corner to the opposite corner of the top square. Sew 1/4" on either side of the pencil line. Cut along the pencil line. Press the squares open. Trim squares to 3-1/2". Repeat for a total of (8) HST.

Flying Geese: Using (2) 3-1/2" Fabric B squares and  (1) 3-1/2"x 6-1/2" Fabric A rectangle, make (1) flying geese block as shown below. Place (1) 3-1/2" square on top of the 3-1/2"x 6-1/2" rectangle, RST, draw a pencil line from corner to corner on the square. Sew on the pencil line. Cut 1/4" on the outside of the sew line. Press open. Repeat for the opposite side of the flying geese block. Repeat for a total of (4) flying geese blocks.

Outer Points: Using (2) 4" triangles and (1) HST, sew together the outer point blocks. Make (4) following the top row diagram and (4) following the bottom row.

Using the (4) flying geese blocks, the remaining (4) 3-1/2" Fabric A squares and (1) 6-1/2" background fabric square, sew together to middle of the block as shown below.

Using the middle block pieced above, the remaining (4) 6-1/2" background fabric squares and the (8) outer point blocks, sew together the block as shown below.

Now you can also play around with the block and create a wonderful lap quilt with 9 blocks or a queen/king size quilt with 16!

     

This quilt finishes at 24" x 24".
